About us

We're an urban farm initiative in Oxford experimenting with zero waste and sustainability, producing delicious microgreens in the process.  However we do things slightly different here at Oxford Microgreens...  We use a farming method called Aquaponics.

What exactly is Aquaponics?

It’s where fish and plants co-exist in a mutually dependent ecosystem, just as they would in their natural habitat. It works by each living organism efficiently sharing and utilising the nutrient resources that the other needs to grow healthy.  The fish digest food and create nutrient-rich water to feed good microbes that convert the waste into nutrients the plants assimilate and in return provide clean water for the fish. It's now considered one of the most environmentally sustainable farming methods.  Although noting new, the Aztec used this method as did many others.

Clean reliable water should not be taken for granted.  What we like most about this way of farming is nothing is wasted, there is no such thing as 'waste' here at Oxford Microgreens, everything gets used just as it would in nature.
